| Each day more legislation is introduced at the municipal and even state level to require mandatory spay / neuter, breeder restrictions, eventually legislating away our rights to pet ownership. I myself constantly struggle with the question of rescue versus breeding. What can deter the inhumane circumstances of puppy mill breeding and import brokering? I don't believe that legislating away our rights to breed pure bred dogs, or ultimately the choice of pet ownership is the prevention to these problems. I do know that as a breeder, it is my responsibility to become my own pet rescue. Which is why a person that purchases a puppy from me will sign a contract agreeing to return a dog to me should circumstances require they give up the dog. I strive to maintain a lifelong relationship with my pet owners. I wish to remain as responsible as I can for the health and happiness of my pets throughout their life. You as a potential pet owner have the responsibility to be well informed about dogs, about the specific breed, and be frank with yourself about your lifestyle. Most importantly, you should not contribute to the fiduciary feasibility of import brokers and pet mills by purchasing from pet stores or broker websites. You might feel you are rescuing a poor puppy from a pet store, but what you are really doing is putting money in the pocket of the person(s) who are NOT ethically breeding. Consider that poor puppy's mother who will continue to be bred until she drops. Your efforts for rescue are better served with a rescue network. A current and widespread problem with french bulldog import brokers is heartbreaking, the puppies are being shipped from halfway around the world with terrible, expensive and life-threatening, life-ending problems.
